Yayasan Wisatari Alam Papua held a group discussion forum (FGD) on climbing tourism at Puncak Nemangkawi (Carstensz Pyramid) and, at the same time, presented professional certificates to local mountain guides.
The event took place at Hotel Horison Diana on Tuesday (23/9/2025) and was attended by representatives of the Military District Command (Kodim), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and a number of invited guests.
Representing the Regent of Mimika, Frans Kambu, Assistant II for Economy and Development, described the event as a first step towards uniting vision and mission in developing climbing tourism at Puncak Nemangkawi while remaining grounded in environmental conservation.
“All this time we have only been spectators on our own land. Now it is time to close ranks and involve the surrounding communities as the main actors, so that our future generations can enjoy the benefits,” he said.
Frans stressed the importance of building communication with Indigenous communities, the security forces, youth leaders and community leaders in order to achieve good management of nature tourism.
Meanwhile, the initiator of Yayasan Wisatari Alam Papua, Dolfin Beanal, stated that his organisation, together with the people of Puncak Carstensz, no longer wants to be mere spectators, but to take an active part in managing and conserving the mountain.
He expressed appreciation for the support of the Ministry of Tourism, which provided official certificates for local guides.
“With these certificates, they can accompany tourists while also protecting the mountain. Until now, many have simply been going about it recklessly,” Dolfin said.
According to him, developing climbing tourism at Nemangkawi can become a new source of income for the community, so that it does not depend solely on the regional government budget.
