About the mountain

Puncak Trikora was known as Wilhelmina Peak until 1963. Its accepted height is 4,750 m, making it the third-highest peak in Oceania after Puncak Jaya (4,884 m) and Puncak Mandala (4,760 m).

The name Trikora was chosen in 1963 to commemorate a speech by Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno — the Tri Komando Rakyat, or “People’s Triple Command”. The Dani people who live near Lake Habbema call the mountain Ettiakup.

Trikora sits in the Maoke/Jayawijaya Range, the mountainous spine of New Guinea. Despite its tropical location, the summit occasionally receives snow. At its first recorded ascent in 1913 the upper slopes still held an ice cap, which retreated from around 1936 and had disappeared by about 1962.

On the way up the vegetation changes from mountain rainforest to beech scrub, grassy swamp and tree ferns, then alpine scrub, lichen-covered scree and finally bare rock at the summit.
