Prepare

Are you ready for Carstensz?

Carstensz Pyramid is a technical rock climb on fixed ropes at altitude, reached after days of travel through remote highlands. Honest preparation matters.

Five areas to prepare

01

Endurance

Several days of trekking or long days at altitude. Build steady endurance before you come.

02

Rope skills

The summit route is climbed on fixed ropes. Practise ascending and descending on fixed lines with your own harness and devices.

03

Altitude

Base camp sits at about 4,200–4,300 m and the summit at 4,884 m. Previous high-altitude experience helps.

04

Time

Allow enough months to train, and keep spare days in your travel plans for weather.

05

Insurance

Cover for cancellation, accident, medical costs, emergency evacuation and baggage is mandatory for every climber.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How high is Carstensz Pyramid?
Carstensz Pyramid — Puncak Nemangkawi — stands at 4,884 m. It is the highest mountain in Indonesia and in Oceania, and one of the Seven Summits.
Do I need technical climbing experience?
The summit is climbed on fixed ropes over steep rock. You should be comfortable ascending and descending fixed lines with your own harness and devices. Take the Readiness Score for a first indication, then talk to our team.
Trekking or helicopter — which should I choose?
Trekking via Tsinga takes 11–13 days and gives you the highland approach. Helicopter access to Yellow Valley Base Camp takes 6–8 days. Both reach the same summit; we help you choose based on time, budget and experience.
How much does an expedition cost?
Prices depend on the route, group size and season, so we quote them in a written proposal. Request a proposal and we will reply personally.
Is insurance required?
Yes. Every climber must be insured for cancellation, accident, medical costs, emergency evacuation and loss or damage of baggage. We cannot take climbers without this cover.
How does booking work?
A 50% deposit confirms your reservation — 60 days before arrival for international climbers, 30 days for domestic climbers. The balance is paid on arrival in Timika.
What if the weather is bad?
Mountain weather can extend the stay at base camp or delay helicopter and charter flights. Our itineraries include spare or reserve days, and we recommend extra days in your travel plans.
What gear do I need to bring?
Personal climbing and camping equipment and a sleeping bag are usually not included. The 6-day helicopter package lists harness, helmet and ascending/descending equipment as included. Your proposal lists exactly what is provided.
